Hanover Hill Walk

This stile-free walk starts from Lane End and continues through lovely woods and over open fields that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

Length: 3 miles (allow up to 2 hours).

Start:  Lane End car park, High Street, Lane End HP14 3ER.

Access Information: Easy walking on good paths, Finings Wood can be muddy at times. There are a couple of noticeable but straight forward climbs.

Refreshments: The Grouse & Ale pub in Lane End and Laceys Farm Shop, Bolter End Farm.

Route:

  1. From the car park entrance, cross over Finings Road to Church Path and continue past the houses to a green. Turn right, follow the rough lane to the right of the church and, where it ends, continue ahead, then to the left through two gates and a cemetery to a wide track. Proceed directly ahead, bear right past the works of ‘E&R Meakes’ to take the path on the right between ‘Blacksmith Cottage’ and ‘Spindleberry’.
  2. Pass through the gate and keep straight ahead on a path along the edge of the wood, Finings Wood. After crossing two footbridges, stay on the main path until it descends to join a bridleway. Bear right, continue along as the track finally rises and passes through 3 gates to reach a junction with a wide farm track.
  3. Turn left and follow the farm track round to the left and through the gate. The views from Hanover Hill towards the upper Hambleden Valley are superb. Continue along the track, down through another gate and follow round to the right towards the driveway to Hanover Hill Barn. Do not join the driveway, instead, turn left along hedge-line to a gate on the right.
  4. Turn left away from the gate and follow the field boundary round two sides and through the gate into a wood, Long Copse. Walk through the wood and the next gate into the field beyond. Continue along field edge, ignoring the gate on the left, before descending through one gate and ascending to next one beside the water tank.
  5. Turn left through the gate, follow fence-line for 150m and turn right. Keep to the right of the hedgerow as it descends then climbs up through a gate. Stay on the path to a path junction and fork left past the old gate and the allotments to an unsurfaced lane on Ditchfield Common.
  6. Turn left up the lane to ‘E&R Meakes’ and retrace the route through the cemetery back to the car park.
