February 28, 2025As spring arrives in March, gardens can quickly transform into a lush jungle of growth. This seasonal explosion of greenery can lead to feelings of overwhelm for many gardeners. However, as garden designers, our goal is to contain this exuberance and create zones of planting that promote tranquillity.
One effective approach is to simplify plant selections, using repeated and cohesive species. While I personally appreciate the charm of loose, natural planting, a more structured design can evoke a sense of calm and control. After all, a garden is a sanctuary where humans can connect with nature, experiencing the unique serenity it offers.
With countless green spaces around us, it’s essential to utilize and expand these areas to enhance joy and calm in our home environments. My mission as a garden designer is to harness the potential of these spaces, using plants to address common problems. The construction industry often disrupts our natural ecosystems, but by preserving trees and plants, and creatively reusing soil, we can contribute positively to our planet while greening our urban surroundings.
By focusing on reducing overwhelm, we guide homeowners on the best practices for planting. We know where to place plants for optimal growth and how to incorporate colour to enliven outdoor spaces. Our expertise extends to addressing issues like screening, managing levels, creating terraces, designing patios, and concealing unsightly views. Ultimately, we aim to transform outdoor areas into green oases that provide refuge from the chaos of modern life.
So, a top tip for bringing some of nature’s abundant joy to your garden: now is the perfect time to sow seeds. Consider direct sowing wildflower seeds into the soil. Simply disturb bare patches of earth and scatter the seeds to see what flourishes. This approach may not offer a long-term solution, but it provides a burst of colour this year and excitement to your garden.
By embracing the season’s growth and applying thoughtful design principles, we can overcome the challenges of garden overwhelm. Whether through careful plant selection or creative landscaping techniques, we have the tools to cultivate spaces that bring joy, tranquillity, and a renewed connection to nature. As we step into spring, let’s seize the opportunity to green our environments and celebrate the beauty that surrounds us.
