September 11, 2024A walk with outstanding views that includes two Commons, Wheeler End and Cadmore End, and hidden valleys.
Length: 4½ miles (allow up to 2½ hours).
Start: Lane End car park, High Street, Lane End HP14 3ER.
Access Information: A moderate walk with 4 stiles and 3 climbs.
Refreshments: The Chequers Inn at Wheeler End, The Grouse & Ale pub in Lane End and Laceys Farm Shop, Bolter End Farm.
- Leave from the rear of the car park, walk straight down Handleton Common and crossover Bullocks Farm Lane. Turn left, go over the motorway and pass The Chequers Inn.
- Cross to the left of the 5mph sign onto the common. Drop down under the overhead cables, turn immediately right to a crossing track at the bottom and climb straight up to Wheeler End Common. Bear right, follow the hedgerow and path for 200m and bear ½ left past the benches towards the buildings of Laurel Farm on the opposite side of the road.
- Cross to the farmyard entrance and a path in front of the large barn on the left. Go through the gate and round to the right. Continue straight ahead through the gate and onwards to leave the farmyard towards the next gate. Go through, follow the track between the fences and, where it turns left, fork right towards the overhead cables. There are far-reaching views from West Wycombe to Stokenchurch. Shortly after passing under the cables, turn right over the stile into a field. Go diagonally right downhill to cross a pair of stiles in the hedgerow at the bottom. Turn right down to a junction of tracks in the valley floor.
- Where the track turns right, turn left into a wood, Tipping Shaw Wood. Immediately after entering, turn left and follow the path to cross a stile into the next wood, Barn Wood. Turn immediately left uphill and, on leaving the wood, turn left and immediately right on a track between the fields. Continue past the buildings and the field on the left and, where the fence on the left ends, turn left uphill through the wood.
- Pass through 3 gates, enter a field, go round to the right and through the gate onto a lane. Turn right along the lane, go round to the left and turn right onto an unmade track towards Cumberland Cottage. Follow the track round to the left past Prospect Place cottages and round to the right to shortly take the path on the left into the wood. Follow this path, ignoring all tracks to the left, to the main road.
- Cross to the left of ‘Dovecot’ and stay on the unmade lane until the 5mph sign is reached again. Turn right past the Chequers Inn and retrace the route back to the car park.
